Elizabethtown, Ky – Elizabethtown attorney Julia Springsteen filed her paperwork this week to run for city council in this November’s election. The attorney and civic leader said she sees a seat on the city council as the logical next step to contributing to the success of the city.

“In ten years of living in Etown, I’ve worked to make things better for homeless pets, local businesses and the more vulnerable members of our community,” said Springsteen. “Serving in city government to support and advance positive changes is very exciting to me.”

Springsteen moved to Elizabethtown in 2009 and soon became active in various community organizations and causes, including helping to establish Friends of Hardin County Animal Shelter (FOHCAS), a non-profit organization that supports the local animal shelter.  The group has been instrumental in improving the lives of homeless pets in the county.

She is also a founding member of Heels Together. The women’s fund, sponsored by the Central Kentucky Community Foundation, invests in projects that transform the lives of women and girls in the community.  She served as a community member of The News-Enterprise Editorial Board and chaired the Elizabethtown Heritage Council to support the development of downtown.

Currently, Springsteen serves on the board of Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland and says the timing couldn’t be more crucial.

“It is heartbreaking to see more families struggle to afford meals each week the Covid-19 pandemic has continued,” said Springsteen, “and also heartwarming to see Feeding America rise to the occasion to serve those in need.”

She serves at the co-chair of the Removing Obstacles subcommittee of the Lincoln Trail Workforce Development Board’s Workforce Crisis Task Force.  The subcommittee is charged with looking for creative ways to work with public and private entities to find businesses the workers they need to be successful.

“As a lawyer who has worked with nonprofits, Julia has a whole skillset different than anyone else on the council,” said supporter Jacqueline Carter Gerard, Ph.d., “When we welcome new people in and are open to their ideas, we gain so much in building our community.”

Gerard added that being a mother of school-aged children is another perspective that Springsteen would bring to the city council that isn’t currently represented.  Springsteen and her husband have two children, ages 11 and 13, who attend Elizabethtown Independent Schools.
